Entering into a new home is one of the important sacraments in the Hindu tradition, and is often celebrated with extensive ritual and celebration. Indeed, a home is where a family will live and grow together, and go through joys, sorrows, gains, losses, milestones and the rest. So, to prepare the home for everything that it will be filled with, rituals are performed to remove negative energy and lingering spirits, and to call in good spirits and the blessings of the devas. Sharath and Shruthi’s ceremony was a three day affair, and was wonderful from start to finish.
The house itself is modern and elegant, with large windows for lots of sunlight. In contrast to many of the cement structures that are popular in India, their house is largely constructed out of stone and wood, giving it a very open and earthy feel. It is equipped with solar panels, rain water harvesting and other environmental considerations, such as a garden space. There is also a small lotus pond on the eastern edge – may they be happy in their new home!
