Astanga Yoga is a system of practice and philosophy that has been shaped over several thousand years. Consistent practice is profoundly transformational: developing the body, evolves the mind and inviting access to our true nature. In his second book on the subject Petri Raisanen illustrates the Intermediate series positions, which are done to purify and strengthen the nervous system and energy channels throughout the body. The positions are presented both individually and as an integrated method of training, complete with clear pictures and detailed text. This inspirational guide acts as testament to the lineage of Astanga Yoga by including interviews with the Jois family: Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, Pramaguru R. Sharath Jois and Saraswathi Jois. Nadi Sodhana is best suited for practitioners who have been practicing yoga consistently for several years; however, it offers a fascinating glimpse into a more advanced practice for all who wish to explore yoga beneath the surface.
Petri has done a really exemplary job of putting this book together. He spent many hours speaking with Guruji about details of the intermediate series, learning many important details that are helpful to know for the proper execution of some of these complex postures. Guruji says in the interview at the start of Petri’s book:
“The intermediate series requires that the student is ready for different poses much sooner than in the primary series, because there are fewer preceding poses that prepare the student for the next pose (i.e., poses from Kapotāsana to Eka-pāda-śīrṣāsana, halfway through the intermediate series). This makes the body and mind increasingly sensitive, stronger and more adept at handling physical and psychological changes, thus reducing the mind’s desire to become attached to things.”
There are many such gems of wisdom and practicality contained in this first, comprehensive presentation of the intermediate series, based entirely on interviews with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois.
All are welcome to come to the demonstration/technique class, and as well to the book signing after. There is no charge for the class, but donations are welcome.
