About AYNY

Ashtanga Yoga New York is dedicated to the teachings and lineage of yoga master Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009). These teachings include traditional yoga practice, chanting, study of yogic texts and worship. The school has also taken part in bringing out some of the important teachings and writings of Pattabhi Jois, including Yoga Mala; Surya Namaskar; Sri K. Pattabhi Jois: A Tribute; and Guruji, A Portrait of the Ashtanga Yoga Master Through the Eyes of His Students.
The school opened with his blessings in 1995 as the New York City branch of his institute in Mysore. In 2001, Pattabhi Jois oversaw the transformation of the school into a functioning Hindu temple by installing, according to Vedic prescriptions, the murti of Abhayankara Mahaganapati (Ganesh). As in his home in Mysore, traditional yoga and worship are practiced on a daily basis as part of the yogic path. Beginners, intermediate and advanced levels of practitioners are all welcome, and practice in harmony together in a welcoming environment.
Please contact info@ayny.org with any questions.
The teachings of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois are being carried forth by his son Manju Jois, his daughter Saraswati Jois, and grandson R. Sharath Jois, the director of his Institute in Mysore, South India.
The director of AYNY is Eddie Stern.
